Flames Shutout Young Harris For Fourth Consecutive Win

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The 24th-ranked Lee University men's tennis team posted its fourth straight win with a 7-0 non-conference defeat of Young Harris College Tuesday afternoon at the Bob & Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex. The Flames improved to 6-1 and the Mountain Lions dropped to 4-5.

The No. 44 doubles team of Francisco Faria and Filipe Krohn opened the competition with a 6-2 defeat of Michael Schut and Mason Harmon at No. 1 doubles. Mike and Quinn Groenendijk held off Rodrigo Mendoza and Caleb McCurry 6-4 to claim the doubles point. Wihan van der Merwe and Jordi Dasi completed the sweep with another 6-4 margin over Jamie Bixby and Hemang Gaur.

Krohn was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 5 singles against Eric DelValle and van der Merwe, ranked No. 62, beat Mendoza 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Quinn Groenendijk posted matching set scores of 6-2 against Harmon at No. 4 singles to clinch the team victory.

Yike Liu edged Gaur 6-3, 7-5 to record a win at No. 6 singles. Faria and Dasi recorded a pair of three-set wins to complete the shutout. Faria dropped his opening set with Bixby 7-5 and fought back to force a third set with a 6-1 score in the second set. Faria won the superset 10-6 to finish the comeback. Dasi and McCurry traded 7-6 tallies for the first two sets with Dasi winning the first set tiebreaker 7-1 and McCurry winning the second set tiebreaker 7-4. In the third set superset, Dasi completed the win with a 10-1 mark.

The Flames return to Gulf South Conference action on Monday, March 25, against Christian Brothers University at the DeVos Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
