CLEVELAND, Tenn.-After the first opening minutes, visiting Auburn University Montgomery took control and dominated the Lee University women's basketball team in a 73-47 victory over the Lady Flames inside Walker Arena on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Warhawks moved into third place in the GSC standings with a 12-5 record (14-7 overall). Lee drops to 12-6, 14-8.
The Lady Flames trailed only 18-15 at the end of the first period but scored only six points in the second period and found themselves down 36-21. Things got even worse in the third frame as AUM put 16 markers on the board and Lee countered with 10, trailing 52-31.
Playing with only seven players, the Warhawks put four of those players in double-figure scoring. Allasha Dudley led the way with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Jemeriah Moore came off the bench and gave her team a big lift with 16 points, five rebounds and six assists. Grace O'Gara countered with 11 points and four rebounds while Brianna Sanchez gave Lee problems inside by tallying 10 points and leading her team in rebounds with eight.
AUM blistered the nets by shooting 54% overall (27-of-50) but even better they made 19-of-21 triples (62%). The visitors only made 6-of-11 free throws. They outrebounded the Lady Flames 32-30 and outscored Lee 26-16 in points in the paint.
The Lady Flames had trouble putting an offensive attack together. They shot only 32% from the field (18-of-57) and after making two quick triples to open the contest, converted just three more the rest of the evening, finishing with 5-of-19 (26%). They were awarded only six freebies and canned all six.
Mallory Hampton had 15 points to lead the Lee scoring. She also added four assists and three steals. Anna Muhonen was the only other Lady Flame in double-figure scoring with 10 points. She also claimed nine rebounds. Kara Williams and Bailey Burgess both hit a pair of triples.
Lee will return to the road on Saturday and face old rival Shorter University in the final meeting of a GSC contest between the two schools. The opening tip for the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
