Flames Ride Pitching, Hitting in Friday Win Over Lions

CLEVELAND, Tenn.-Lee University pushed across eight runs in the first inning and never looked back in an 18-4 baseball victory over Mars Hill University at Larry Carpenter Stadium on Friday evening. The Flames improved their record to 4-1 and are scheduled to be back in action on Saturday at 11 AM hosting the Lions in the second game of a three-game series.

Jack Nedrow picked up his second pitching win of the season. The right-hander hurled five innings and gave up five hits and one earned run. He fanned six and did not walk a batter. Zachary Lawson was outstanding in his three innings of work. The freshman was perfect. He faced the minimum of nine batters and struck out four.

Lucas Quezada pitched the ninth and hit the first three batters he faced before giving up a single that allowed two runs and a sacrifice fly that plated the final score. He allowed one hit and three earned runs while striking out one.

The Flames made the best of 11 hits. Brantley Cutler and Brock Sisson had two hits apiece and both drove in three runs. Cutler also scored three times. Cam Suto and Ashton Simmons also joined the two-hit parade. Suto collected a pair of RBI and pushed two runners across the plate. Simmons knocked in one run and scored once.

Brandon Daniels doubled in the first inning as the Flames sent 13 hitters to the plate. Daniels posted two runs batted in with the blast to left-centerfield. JJ Williams came on in a reserve role and promptly ripped a line-drive shot over the left-field wall. Williams ended up scoring twice in the contest.

However, it was Josiah Miller who likely set a record that may not be listed in the book. He was hit by a pitch four times and scored three runs. Matthew Batts was nailed twice by Lion pitchers and scored twice while collecting an RBI and not officially posting a time at bat.

Mars Hill had six hits and Chad Sikes collected two of the hits, but Quinn Rembert, who came in as a pinch hitter, promptly drove in two runs for the Lions in the ninth inning. Jaden James had the other hit that pushed two runners across the plate in the ninth.

The Lions used five pitchers in the loss. Dearl Edens started, pitched one inning and was charged with the loss. Philip Devita was the fifth hurler to take the mound for the visitors. He hurled four innings and allowed one hit and an earned run, walking three and striking out two.

Coach Mark Brew's thoughts:

"Jack Nedrow gave us another great start and I thought Zachary Lawson pitched excellent out of the pen. We have been searching for a spot to throw him multiple innings again and he filled up the zone and had good stuff. Brock Sisson and Brantley Cutler gave us really nice days at the plate and Ashton Simmons keeps chipping in some quality at bats while playing lockdown defense.

"Tomorrow will be a different day and we need to flip the page quickly as I am sure Mars Hill will be ready to go. Weather will once again be a challenge, but it's typically always something we deal with this time of year."
