Flames Fall in Road Contest to Union

Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. –The home standing Union University Bulldogs led the Lee University Flames wire-to-wire in a 84-68 rout of the Flames on Thursday evening. With the loss, the Flames fell to 19-7 on the season and 16-7 in Gulf South Conference action. Union kept their season alive staying in eighth place in the GSC going to 13-14 overall and 10-13 in GSC action.
 
In a very quickly played first half, neither team was able to score for the first two and half minutes before Union hit a three point shot. UU lead 5-0 before Lee was able to get on the board. It tool almost five minutes before Tim Vaughn made the first bucket for the Flames. The 5-2 score was the closest Lee would be in the contest. 
 
Union would use an 8-0 run to quickly take the score out to 18-4 and then another short run to lead it 27-9. Lee would close the gap to seven points at 32-25, but that was as close as they would get. UU would lead it 34-25 at halftime, but would start the second period on a11-7 run to extend the advantage back out to 13 points. The Flames would never get the deficit closer than 10 points and fall 84-68.
 
JJ Barnes led the Flames with a career high 19 points. Vaughn added 16 points and Noah Boler- Kyle had a double-double with 12 points and a career high 14 points. 
 
Lee was 6-for-29 from the three-point arc while Union was 11-for-16. Lee was also 12-for-22 from the free throw line while UU was 17-for-26.
 
The Flames will head to Memphis, Tenn. to close out the regular season with a showdown with Christian Brothers University at 3 PM on Saturday March 2.
 
Coach Bubba Smith's Thoughts:
 
"Really slow start for us. Not really keyed in. We looked timid early. We got behind the 8 ball and played catch up the rest of the game."
 
When we made mistakes they made shots. There wasn't enough toughness on the road. Now we have to put this behind us and look to rebound at CBU on Saturday.
