CLEVELAND, Tenn. –After a slow start, the Lee University lacrosse team made a strong push but could not complete the comeback falling to #20 Lynn University 19-14 on Thursday evening at the Ray Conn Sports complex. With the loss the Lady Flames fell to 5-2 on the season.
Lynn won the first three draw controls and scored three goals just three minutes into the contest. After the Lady Flames won a draw control, Maggie Luzier scored on a free position shot to get on the scoreboard. Brittney White got another goal in the first quarter, but Lynn led 5-2 after 15 minutes.
The second quarter was another period that Lynn had a lot of success. The Fighting Knights scored six more goals while Lee only managed three. Two of the three goals for the Lady Flames came a man up with Kylee Kangas and Emma Bailey each scoring with the advantage. Makenna Luzier scored the third goal of the second quarter to bring Lee to within six at 11-5 at the halftime break.
The third quarter was all Lee as the Lady Flames scored seven times to bring the deficit to just two points. Callie Curtis scored five goals for Lee in the quarter to help bring the Lady Flames close. Maggie Luzier and Hannah Vecsey each scored a goal as well and Lee trailed 14-12 after three quarters.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Lady Flames would get as Lynn would score five goals in the fourth to just two for the Lady Flames. Curtis and Vecsey would each score as Lee fell 19-14.
Lynn outshot the Lady Flames 42-19 in the contest including 33-15 on goal. Kaleigh Bernard and Caleigh Smith would combine for 14 saves in the loss with each earning seven. Lynn would only have one save in the contest. The Fighting Knights dominated the draw controls with 25 to just 12 for Lee.
Curtis would be the game high scorer with six goals on eight shots.
The Lady Flames will be back in action at home on Tuesday, March 5 at 2 PM as they will host Thomas More University for the first time.
Coach Megan's Smith Thoughts:
"The fight was great in the second half they really showed what they are capable of even in the loss. Callie really had herself a day. We made some adjustments on the draw with her and we were able to take advantage of that."
"We've been really focused on shooting percentage and it showed tonight with Lynn only having one save. We need to learn from our mistakes tonight and not repeat them as we take on Thomas More on Tuesday"
