CLEVELAND, Tenn.-The Lee University baseball team pounded out 27 hits, including seven homeruns, in posting two wins over visiting Cedarville University (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon at Larry Carpenter Stadium. The two victories completed a three-game sweep of the Yellow Jackets and improved the Flames record to 15-7 overall.
Lee won the opening game 20-10 and the nightcap 8-1. Coach Mark Brew will send his Flames back into action on Tuesday at Carson-Newman (2 p.m.). After the non-conference game, the Flames will return to GSC play on Friday hosting Auburn University at Montgomery (4 p.m.). The two teams will tangle again on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
Game 1 – Lee 20, Cedarville 10
The Flames homered five times in the win. Matthew Batts quickly put Lee on top in the bottom of the first inning when his three-run shot bounced off the scoreboard in right-center field. It was his third homerun of the year. Dylan Standifer (5), Cam Suto (3), JJ Williams (5) and Riley Black (3) also blasted four-baggers in the contest.
Luke Collier led the hit parade with four, including a double. He also scored twice. Williams banged out three hits and drove in two runs. Standifer added to his day with four RBI and three runs scored. Suto knocked in a pair and crossed the plate twice while Daniels was not to be outdone with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Josiah Miller stroked two doubles and also tallied two of Lee's 20 runs.
Keegan Gagliardo pitched the first four innings and allowed only three hits, one earned run, striking out five and walking two. Ty Cobb (2-0) worked the next three innings and was credited with the pitching win. He allowed one earned runs, fanned four and walked one. Lucas Quezada was called on to pitch to a pair of batters. Zachary Lawson hurled the final 1.1 frames. He gave up a pair of hits but no earned runs.
Boston Torres carried the big bat for the losers. He had four hits, drove in three runs and scored once. Caleb McKinion followed with a double, two RBI and one run scored. Jensen Wagoner was the starting and losing Yellow Jackets pitcher. In three innings, he allowed six hits and five earned runs. Four other pitchers followed Wagoner to the mound.
Game 2 – Lee 8, Cedarville 1
Standifer and Suto continued to pace Lee's seven-hit attack. Standifer was 2-for-2 with three runs scored while Suto had three hits. Brandon Daniels ripped a three-run homer, his fifth of the year and collected his team-leading 37 RBI. Collier thrilled the crowd with a grand-slam homer in the third inning. It was his fourth homer of the year. Williams also collected a two-base hit while Batts, Isaiah French and Ashton Simmons also hit safely in the win.
Nelson Smith (3-2) turned in a solid pitching performance for the Flames. In four innings, he allowed four hits and no earned runs, struck out seven and walked only one batter. Tim Gooden, Cole Matthaidess and Hunter Lane pitched one inning each in following Smith to the mound in the seven-inning contest.
