CLEVELAND, Tenn.- An eight run fourth inning proved to be the difference as the Lee University softball team defeated Christian Brothers University 11-8 on Sunday afternoon. Kyra Vieux and Alyson Jarvi each delivered home runs in the win. The win gave the Lady Flames a 2-1 series win over CBU. It is their third Gulf South Conference series win of the season. Lee improved to 12-14 overall and 8-7 in GSC play with the victory.
CBU scored two runs in the first inning to take the lead. After an error from Lee starting pitcher Abigail Welbaum, Summer Alexander drove in Haylee Alberson with a double. She then scored a moment later after a single from Brynley DeLancey to give CBU the 2-0 lead.
The Lady Flames took the lead in the bottom of the second. Kyra Vieux hit her first home run of her career and brought in three runs. Her blast to right field scored Annalyn Ormsby and Alyson Jarvi.
The fourth inning featured eight runs for Lee. Vieux scored the first run when Scalzo reached safely on an error. Hailey Simco got her first RBI when she brought Shelby Cole home. Javaria broke the game open when she smashed a triple to right field. She brought two more runs home. Rylie Goodridge also had a double to bring home Smith. The icing on the cake in the fourth was a two-run home run from Jarvi to make it 10-2. Ormsby scored the final run in the inning after an error.
CBU didn't go away quietly though as they answered with six runs of their own in the fifth. A sacrifice bunt, home run, single, and a double helped plate the runs for CBU. Lee brought in Alaina Watson to pitch, and she did not allow a run in the last two innings and Lee earned the win 11-8 win.
Abigail Welbaum earned her second win of the season. She went four and one-third innings and gave up five runs on six hits. Only three runs were earned in her outing. Katie Willoughby threw for a third of an inning and gave up three runs on three hits. Watson earned her first save of the season.
Offensively, the Lady Flames had nine players collect hits and they had 14 as a team. Vieux led the way with two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored.
The Lady Flames will take on the University of North Georgia on Wednesday, March 27 at Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn.
