Women's Tennis Posts 6-1 GSC Win Over West Georgia

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Following a one week layoff, the Lee University women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 Gulf South Conference victory over West Georgia Thursday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames (5-1, 2-1 GSC) are scheduled to be in action again at Carson-Newman University on March 17 in Jefferson City, Tenn. The GSC contest at Valdosta State that was set for Saturday has been postponed and will be played at a later date.

Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobayakawa beat Lea Von Kozierowski and Futaba Saito 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Ashleigh Simes and Maria Fernanda Duarte doubled-up Sophie Mnich and Andrea Medel 6-3 to secure the doubles point. West Georgia (3-4, 0-2 GSC) avoided the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win by Karla Menendez and Luna Mouton over Elizaveta Gnilozubova and Hayden Smith.

Simes opened singles competition with a 6-1, 6-0 takedown of Von Kozierowski at the No. 1 position. Kobayakawa beat Menendez 6-1 and 6-3 at the third spot to push the Lee lead to 3-0.

Callie Stanfield ended Lee's hopes of a shutout with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against Smith. The Lady Flames regained their momentum and clinched the team win with Fernanda Duarte's 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Medel. Penalver Aguilo was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles and Gnilozubova used a 7-5 tiebreaker in the second set to complete her two-set win against Rebeca Lopez and supply the final margin.

Coach Patric Hynes' Thoughts:
"A good team win for us. We are working hard to create our own identity and I think it showed today. We'll take a few days and get ourselves ready for the back half of the season."
