WINGATE, NC.- The Lee University dropped two non-conference matches to #11 Wingate University on Friday afternoon. The Lady Flames dropped game one 11-2 then lost in game two 2-1.
 
GAME 1
 
Wingate used a big second inning to pull away and win the first game of the double header. The Bulldogs used five hits, three walks and a couple of wild pitches to score seven runs. Of the the five hits, only one was an extra base hit with a double.
 
In the top of the fourth, the Lady Flames struck back with a couple of runs. Bella Galloway started the inning out with a walk. Then Annalynn Ormsby reached safely on an error. Marquila Howell then drove both of them in with a two-out single.
 
Wingate added a run in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly. Then ended the game in the fifth with a double single, and then a two-run home run.
 
Alexa Scalzo and Howell had the only two hits for Lee in the loss. Alaina Watson (1-3) had her third loss of the season giving up seven runs on five hits while striking out one in two innings. Hayden Gardner threw in relief in two and one-third innings giving up four runs on four hits.
 
GAME 2
 
It was a pitching duel the first several innings in game two. Olivia Tyson struck out four in the first three innings of play. Alexa Scalzo got the first hit for the Lady Flames in the fourth when she hit a double to left field, but she was stranded there.
 
Wingate scored first in the bottom of the fourth when a Ragan Liles doubled and then scored on back-to-back wild pitches. Wingate their second and final run with a double and then a single to score the run.
 
The only run for Lee came in the top of the sixth inning. Howell led it off with a single, then she stole second base. After a fly out, Javaria Smith drove Howell home. Gardner and Laney Harris each got on to load the bases, but the Lady Flames left the bases loaded in the sixth.
 
Lee out hit Wingate 6-5 in game two with both teams stranding five base runners. Six different Lady Flames earned a hit in the game. Olivia Tyson (2-5) went four and two-thirds innings giving up one run on two hits while striking out six. Abigail Welbaum threw one and one third innings in relief and gave up one run on three hits.
 
The Lady Flames will go to South Carolina on Tuesday, March 13 and will take on Southern Wesleyan University.
