YOUNG HARRIS, Ga – Young Harris College scored eight runs in the first two innings and never looked back in posting a 14-2 victory over the Lee baseball team at Zell B. Miller Field on Tuesday afternoon. It was the 12th straight win for the Mountain Lions who improved to 22-2 on their home field this season. Overall, the surging Young Harris team improved to 34-13 while the Flames dropped to 37-9.
Coach Mark Brew will regroup his forces and get ready for a huge three-game GSC series at West Florida on Friday and Saturday. The Flames continue to lead the conference with a 21-6 record while the Argonauts are holding down third place with a 16-11 mark. It is the final conference series for both clubs.
The Flames managed only eight hits against two Mountain Lion pitchers. Colby Williams (2-0) was the starter and worked six innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. He struck out six and walked one. Lefty Ryan Heishman was called on for the final three frames. He allowed only three hits, fanned two and did not walk a batter.
Lee's runs came in the fourth and fifth innings. Cam Suto connected for his team-leading 13th homer in the fourth inning, while Josiah Miller ripped a four-bagger in the fifth inning. It was his ninth homerun. Suto and Brandon Daniels were the only Lee players with two hits. Riley Black, Luke Collier and Brantley Cutler also hit safely.
The Flames used seven pitchers in the loss. Nelson Smith (3-5) pitched the first inning and was charged with the defeat. He gave up only two hits but walked three, hit a batter and allowed five earned runs. Ty Cobb was the third Lee hurler to toe the rubber. In 2.2 innings he surrendered four hits, walked two and struck out two, but gave up only one earned run. Hunter Lane entered and picked up an out while allowing two hits and a run. Cole Matthaidess was the sixth Lee pitcher to take the mound. In 1.1 innings he allowed a hit, hit a batter and gave up two earned runs. David White got the final out of the afternoon but also allowed a couple of earned runs.
The Mountain Lions banged out 13 hits, including six extra-base blows. Jack Enrico finished with a homerun, two doubles and two singles. He drove in six runs and scored once. Jeremy Begora also enjoyed three hits and three RBI. He had two doubles and a single and scored four times.
