Late Goal Lifts AUM Past Flames

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A goal in the 87th minute for the Auburn University Montgomery men's soccer team gave them the 2-1 win over Lee University on Friday evening. Despite scoring the first goal, the Flames could not hold off the Warhawks and fell to 2-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Gulf South Conference action. Meanwhile the #11 Warhawks improved to 3-0-3 on the year.

Lee came out of the gates firing as Marlon Grossman took a shot just 49 seconds into the contest forcing a save from AUM. Nick Lu fired another shot towards the goal, but it was saved as well.

The Flames finally struck just after the 21st minute mark. Marcos Garcia led a counter attack. He ran down the left side and slotted a bass to Ryan Chouyouti in the middle of the penalty box. Chouyouti then passed on one touch to Grossman who was standing wide open in front of the goal and scored his third goal of the season.

The Warhawks tied the game in the 31st minute. Landon Surrat had a long throw into the box and Tasker Wheeler headed it into the back of the net to get the equalizer.

The second half featured several shots from the Warhawks, but Jakob Buhrkuhl came up with several big saves. Lee also had several opportunities but could not convert. Then in the 87th minute, Benjamin Hoffman for AUM caught Buhrkuhl off his line and slipped a shot passed to give AUM the win.

AUM outshot the Flames 12-6 with a 10-5 advantage with shots on goal. AUM was issued to cards while Feliz Niedwetzki earned one for the Flames.

Lee will be back in action on Sunday, September 29 at the University of Montevallo.
