Flames End Roadtrip with Shutout Over Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After a tough loss on Friday night, the Lee University men's soccer team bounced back with a 3-0 shutout over the University of Montevallo on Sunday afternoon. One goal in the first half and then two late goals in the second half helped the Flames secure their second shutout of the season. With the win, Lee improved to 3-3-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in conference action. Montevallo fell to 3-2-2 and 1-1 in the GSC slate.

Lee had a couple of early opportunities as Ryan Chouyouti hit the cross bar just 73 seconds into the contest. Moments later Marlon Grossman just went wide on a shot. The Fames continued to push the pressure and had five more shots in the first ten minutes. March Ehmann finally broke the deadlock. Off of a free kick, Ehmann found the bottom left corner to give Lee the 1-0 lead.

At the end of the first 45 minutes, Lee had 12 shots with six on frame. Lee had four more shots in the second half with three on target. In the 72nd minute, Daniel Garvilla doubled the lead off of an assist from Ehmann. Then in the 84th minute Jordan Durante had the icing on the cake as he took a pass from Felix Niedwetzki and beat the keeper in a one-on-one battle.

Lee forced six saves from the Montevallo goalkeeper while Jakob Buhrkuhl had three saves for the Flames. Lee ended up with 16 shots with seven on target in the win.

The Flames will be back at home on Friday, October 4 at 5 PM as they will host Spring Hill College.

 Coach Potteiger's Thoughts:

"We absolutely needed the result today and the guys knew it heading into the game. You never want to add weight to a game and make it about more than just that game, but we had let points slip thru our fingers our last 2 GSC games and so there was a bit more riding on this game.  It's hard to win games on the road, particularly on Sunday, but the guys came out and got the job done today.

We have a lot of internal belief with what we are capable of doing as a group this season and though a few results haven't aligned with our performance, we keep getting better and guys our understanding their roles and the partnerships within our system.

We will rest up now, but we are looking forward to getting back out on the field on Friday."
