Unbeaten West Florida Hands Women's Soccer 1-0 Defeat

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In a contest that was evenly played from start to finish, the University of West Florida women's soccer team remained undefeated with a 1-0 victory over Lee University on Friday evening at the UWF Soccer Complex. The Argonauts improved to 6-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in GSC play. The Lady Flames stand at 5-2-1, 3-2-0.

Lee outshot West Florida 10-9 and 6-5 on shots on goal. The contest could have very easily ended in a 1-1 tie, but the Lady Flames had a goal disallowed by the officials. The winning Argonauts score came in the 12th minute of the opening half (12:45) and was scored by Olof Thorvaldsdottir. It was assisted by Megan Gettys.

In the first half Lee took four of its 10 shots. The other six came in the second 45 minutes. Reserve Siri Stenslie fired two shots on goal for the Lady Flames while Lucy Smith had one. Starters Megan Davis, Avery Sides and Whitney Carrigan took one shot apiece.
The Argos took six shots in the opening 45 and only three in the second half. The Lady Flames battled for five corner kicks and West Florida received six. Lee was called for nine fouls and the Argos 10. There were no yellow cards issued in the contest.

Abby Whitcomb registered four saves in goal for the Lady Flames and Belle Okoroafo collected six saves and picked up the win in goal for West Florida.

Lee continues the road adventures on Sunday, traveling to Mobile, Ala. and facing Spring Hill College in a contest slated for a 2 p.m. first kick.

Coach Lee Hughes' thoughts:
"Honestly, I thought we were the better team tonight. We had a goal disallowed and some really nice chances, but sometimes soccer runs that way. Not the outcome we wanted but definitely left it all out on the field and certainly proud of the girls for that!"
