Men's Soccer Gets First GSC Win with Shutout over Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. –On a muddy and rain Sunday afternoon, the Lee University men's soccer team earned their first Gulf South Conference win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of Spring Hill College. It is the fourth win of the season for the Flames, and they have had shutouts in three of the wins. Lee improved to 4-4-2 and 1-3-2 in GSC action.

Both teams took a while to adjust to the sloppy conditions as the first shot of the game did not come until the 14th minute from Nicolas Napoli. Marius Brandtun had the second shot of the game in the 18th minute. Carols Fernandes then broke through and gave Lee the lead in the 20th minute. His unassisted shot came from 25 yards out as he blasted one into the back corner of the net. Paul Northcutt managed two saves in the first half.

Napoli made it two goals for the Flames in the 79th minute on a rocket shot that found the left side of the goal. Napoli then made it three to zero with a goal in 85th minute on a pass from Yann Gerard.

Lee outshot Spring Hill 10-7 in the contest. Northcutt made three saves to keep the Badgers off the board. SHC had three yellows while Lee did not receive a booking.

Lee will return home for their final non-conference game on Saturday, October 11 as they will host Lander University.

Coach Derek Potteiger's Thoughts:
"That was a much needed result and much deserved win for the guys.  There were a few players in particular that made sure there was only one result we were leaving with today and so I'm extra proud of those guys!
Things haven't been easy this season as we have, and continue to face our share of challenges; but ultimately those are the tests that either cause you to fall apart as a team or an become an even stronger group and even stronger men.
Now we have a couple weeks to recover, get healthy and get ready for the home stretch of the GSC."
