Women's Soccer Season Ends in Opening Round of South Region Tourney

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The season ended for the Lee University women in the NCAA DII South Region Soccer Tournament on Friday afternoon at the NSU Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium. The sixth-seeded University of Montevallo eliminated the third-seeded Lady Flames with a 2-0 shutout.

The Falcons posted the first goal in the 37th minute (37:44) of the opening half when Isabel Dillehay found the wide-open net and scored the easy unassisted goal. Montevallo put the icing on the victory cake at the 67:07 mark in the second half when Morgan Goehring tallied on an assist from Dillehay.

The Falcons only took seven shots the entire afternoon but placed four on target. They also had just one corner kick. On the other hand, Lee fired 14 shots and placed six on goal. The Lady Flames battled for six corner kicks. The rugged Falcons were whistled for 11 fouls and Lee five. There were no yellow cards issued.

Maci Ritzman was the leading shot taker for Lee. She fired three shots and had two on goal. Whitney Carrigan had a pair of shots and one on target. Morgan Davis, Mallory Miller and Analisa Lujan each had a shot on goal.

The Lady Flame's goalkeeper Abby Whitcomb had two saves and was charged with the loss while the Falcon's Jolie Cozale collected six saves in goal and claimed the victory.

Lee's season ended with an 11-4-3 record while Montevallo moves on with a 13-6-2 mark. They will be pitted against host and undefeated Nova Southeastern.

Coach Lee Hughes' Thoughts:

"All credit to Montevallo they are a really good team. We weren't at our best today but I was proud of the effort we put forward to try to get back in the game. We had some chances inside the six but could not put it away. It's tough when you come to the end of a season because you aren't around everyone all the time and this team was a great group to be with every day."
