Flames Tether Falcons in First GSC Contest

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – In the opening Gulf South Conference game of the year, the Lee University men's basketball never trailed in a decisive 75-61 win over the University of Montevallo. The Flames made 12 threes and held the Falcons to their lowest scoring output of the season.

Zach Gray and Dayveun Anderson set the tone early with each hitting two long range shots in the first four minutes to give Lee the lead. Montevallo did not have an answer from long range as they were 5-for-22 from the three-point arc in the loss.

After going down by as many as eight the Falcons kept it close in the first half and got it down to as close as three points before Lee pushed it to nine-point lead at the break.

The second half was all Flames. Tim Vaughn sparked a 12-2 run to start the second half. Lee made 14 shots in the second half and held the Falcons to just eight.

Four Flames scored in double digits with Tylon Chatman leading the way. The junior had 18 points and nine assists, Vaughn had 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Gray had 17 and Anderson had 12.

Lee had 18 points off of UM turnovers and scored 23 points in the paint.

Lee will remain at home on Saturday, December 6 and will host Auburn University Montgomery at 4 PM.

Coach Bubba Smith's Thoughts:
"We had a lot of time to prepare this week, and we really did a good job with our game plan. Our defense did a great job on their two best players and paying to scout specific things. We played connected unselfish basketball tonight."
