Battling Lady Flames Pull Off Key Road Win at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Lee University women's basketball team pulled off its second consecutive road win on Saturday afternoon, defeating host University of West Alabama 65-56 in another hard-fought GSC contest. The win moved the Lady Flames into third place in the conference standings and in front of the University of West Florida by one-half game. Lee improved to 11-4 in the league standings and 17-4 overall. The battling Tigers dropped to 3-12, 3-16.

The Lady Flames return home for two important GSC contests on Thursday and Saturday. They will face dangerous Valdosta State University at 5:30 p.m. and then host the showdown with rival West Florida on Saturday at 2 p.m.
With a pair of starters, including Mallory Hampton remaining on the sideline with injuries, several Lady Flames picked up the pace against a determined West Alabama team. Haylee Johnson again led Lee with 16 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. She made 7-of-16 shots overall.

Kara Williams nailed three big triples and had 13 points while Mia Hurst connected on two triples and posted nine points. Bailey Burgess hit one three and was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line (5 points) and Abby McFarland canned the other long-range shot. Anna Muhonen had her best performance on the glass this season, pulling down 11 rebounds. She was also 3-of-6 from the field and finished with six points. Haley Cameron was 3-of-4 with her overall shooting attempts and joined Addison Smith with six points.

The Lady Flames shot 40% overall (24-of-60) and made 29% from deep (7-of-24). They also canned 10-of-15 free throws. Lee turned the basketball over 11 times but forced the Tigers into 20 floor mistakes. West Alabama hit 42% of its shots (22-of-53) and 31% from long range (4-of-13). The home club was awarded 10 freebies and made eight. Four Tigers scored in double figures. Kaedre Denson led the scoring with 18 points but it was Shayla Golden who produced a double-double, 14 points and 13 rebounds. Kendall Lacoste added 12 markers and Callie Cowan finished with 10 points.

Coach Marty Rowe's thoughts:
"This was a really good win for our team. We didn't shoot it very well in the first half but we kept ourselves in it defensively. We keep finding different ways to win and that's a great identity to have."
