MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team opened conference play with a 7-0 shutout of Christian Brothers University Saturday morning. The Flames improved to 5-0 and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Bucs fell to 5-2, 0-2 GSC.
Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen opened doubles action with a 6-1defeat of Juan Ycaza and Ignacio Mora. Filipe Krohn and Jackson Vaughan beat Benjamin Hanriot and Pedro Gomez 6-2 to secure the doubles point for the Flames. Rytis Razminas and Jace Sanford were extended to a tiebreaker score of 9-7 to win their No. 3 doubles match 7-6.
Wihan van der Merwe took down Ycaza 6-3, 6-0 to begin singles competition and put Lee ahead 2-0. Krohn moved the Flames to within one of the team win with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Mora at No. 2 singles.
Brad Sy-A-Foek clinch the team victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Martin. Langerhuizen and Kelly split the first two sets of the No. 4 singles match with each winning 6-3 before Langerhuizen posted a 12-10 win in the super set tiebreaker.
Groenendijk claimed the first set against Hanriot but lost the second 7-5. Groenendijk outlasted Hanriot 10-8 to win the super set tiebreaker. Razminas also needed three sets to beat Ernesto Pico at No. 6 singles. Pico won the opening set 7-5 and Razminas forced a third set with a 6-3 second set score. Razminas completed the Lee shutout with a 10-2 mark in the super set tiebreaker.
The Flames are scheduled to host Lincoln Memorial University on Wednesday, March 5. The non-conference match is set for a 2 p.m. start at the DeVos Tennis Center.
