No. 40 Flames Take Down No. 24 North Georgia 4-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The No. 40 Lee University men's tennis team handed No. 24 University of North Georgia a 4-0 defeat Saturday morning. The match was a part of the 2nd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase at the Champions Club Tennis Complex at Rivermont Park.

The Flames (6-0) victory over the Nighthawks (5-2) was the program's fifth win out of seven matches with UNG.

Wihan van der Merwe and Stefan Mos took down Franco Rebora and Lleyton Beasley 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. Filipe Krohn and Jackson Vaughan secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Pedro Liborio and Janos Varga at No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished with Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen leading Robin Eldin and Juan Cruz Blanco 5-4.

Krohn opened singles competition with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Rebora at No. 3 singles. Mos continued the Lee momentum by beating Marcos Castellanos 6-2 and 6-4 at the fifth position. Langerhuizen blanked Varga 6-0 in the first set of their No. 4 singles match. Langerhuizen needed a tiebreaker score of 7-2 to win 7-6 and clinch the team contest.

The final three singles matches were left unfinished. Liborio, ranked No. 10, led van der Merwe 6-2, 5-4. Groenendijk won his opening set with Eldin 6-4 and was tied 3-3 in the second. Brad Sy-A-Foek split the first two sets with Blanco and was trailing 5-1 in the third set.

"We made a great start in doubles; our guys were very sharp," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "It's always pleasing to beat good teams and North Georgia are always tough. We'll start to get ready for our conference season which really cranks up after spring break."

The Flames return to action next Saturday against West Florida, currently ranked No. 1. The GSC contest is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.
