JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lee University baseball team posted its first road win of the season, and it turned out to be a big one. The Flames (12-11) handed Carson-Newman (16-6) a 2-0 defeat on a near-perfect Tuesday afternoon at Silver Diamond Field. The victory gave Lee a two-game season sweep of the Eagles. Lee will return to GSC action on Friday and Saturday and will host Mississippi College at Larry Carpenter Stadium.
The Flames got excellent pitching and a clutch hit in the second inning to secure the victory. In the second, Malachi Cloud walked, and Ryan Valdez followed with a one-base hit. Both advanced to second and third with a double steal. Ashton Simmons came up with what turned out to be the biggest hit of the contest when he singled to drive home Malachi Cloud and Valdez to put Lee's only two runs of the game on the board.
Lee finished the contest with ten hits. Luke Collier and Valdez joined Josiah Miller and Simmons with two hits each. Miller joined JJ Williams with doubles while Isaiah French had the other Lee safe knock. All totaled, the Flames left 11 runners on the base paths.
Coach Mark Brew and his pitching coach Kaleb Schmidt sent seven pitchers to the mound. Zachary Lawson got the start (two innings), Seth Parker (2-0) followed for two frames and was credited with the win. Dylan Van Meeteren faced two batters and Colt McKibben one hitter. David White (two innings) was followed by Evan Bloomer for the next pair of Flames. Tim Gooden made his first appearance of the season and pitched the ninth inning. He allowed one hit and picked up the save. Lee hurlers only allowed three walks over the nine innings
The Eagles rallied in the ninth. With one out, Nick Castellana was hit by a pitch. Trey Miller reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Ryan Jenkins singled to right and made a wide turn when he tried to go to second. Levi Cloud made a strong throw and Simmons put the tag on Jenkins for the final out. The Eagles were able to muster only six hits off the Lee pitching and Jenkins had two of the knocks. Carson-Newman left 10 runners on base.
Coach Mark Brew's thoughts:
"Our pitching staff really did an excellent job today. We needed several to step up and they all were ready. Ashton had a big two-out after our double steal and Levi had the big throw to end the game at second base. It is a good win versus a team that has been playing really well all year. Hopefully, we can use this momentum entering the weekend versus a really good Mississippi College team."
