CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The 25
th-ranked Lee University women's tennis team remained unbeaten with a 6-1 defeat of Valdosta State University Wednesday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames moved to 3-0 within the GSC and 9-0 overall, while the Lady Blazers dropped to 2-6, 1-3 GSC.
The Lady Flames swept the doubles matches with all three coming by a 6-4 score. Ashleigh Simes and Aliyah Dwyer, ranked No. 50 in doubles, took down Alyssa Novoa and Olivia Pezo. Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobayakawa beat Viktoriia Fedorova and Natalie Rainke to secure the doubles point. Mirjana Ragastovac and Nicolette Fuhr completed the sweep against Valentina Jimenez and Kayla Greco.
Simes, ranked No. 1 in singles, beat Rainke to open singles competition. Pezo was a 6-0, 6-3 winner against Dwyer at No. 3 singles to end the Lee shutout bid.
Ragastovac beat Fedorova 6-2 and 6-1 to put Lee ahead 3-1. Penalver Aguilo dropped her opening set against Novoa 7-6 following a 9-7 tiebreaker. Penalver Aguilo fought back to win the match and clinched the team victory with set scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
Kobayakawa used a tiebreaker of 7-3 to win the first set against Greco 7-6 and finished the straight set win with a 6-3 second set score. Fuhr was shut out 6-0 by Jimenez in their first set before forcing a third set with an 8-6 tiebreaker in the second set. Fuhr outlasted Jimenez 11-9 to claim the super set tiebreaker.
The Lady Flames continue with a stretch of GSC matches on Friday against Delta State University. The contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.

"Conditions weren't easy with the wind today, but we played a really strong doubles point. Different girls keep stepping up, it's pleasing to see. Valdosta are a tricky team to play against and I thought our effort was really good."
