Scalzo's Home Runs Lifts Lee past Montevallo

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Alexa Scalzo hit two home runs to help lead the Lee University softball team past the University of Montevallo 4-3 in the opening game of the Gulf South Conference series. Scalzo hit a solo home run in the first, a two-run home run in the fourth, and then scored the game winning run in the sixth inning. 
 
Montevallo took the lead in the top of the first with a two-run home run. Scalzo then answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the frame. They Lady Flames got two more on base in the first but left them stranded. 
 
Lee then took the lead in the fourth. Ava Perkins led off with a single and then stole second base. Scalzo then brought her home with her second blast of the game. Montevallo tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth with a solo home run of their own.
 
Lee scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Scalzo reached safely after an error by Montevallo. She made it safely to second after the error. Ana Macha then singled through the left side. The hit put Scalzo over to third base. Javaria Smith then drove in Scalzo with a single for the winning run.
 
Natalie Pruitt-Geesey earned her 13th win of the season going all seven innings. She gave up three runs on seven hits. She walked one and had three strikeouts. Taylor Lloyd took the loss for Montevallo. She threw six innings and gave up seven hits and four runs while striking out seven.
 
Scalzo led the way at the plate with two hits, three runs and three RBI. Macha, Perkins, and Smith all had two hits as week.
 
The two teams will play a double header at Butler Field beginning at 1 PM on Saturday, March 29.
