MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 27 Lee University men's tennis team claimed a Gulf South Conference road match against No. 45 University of Montevallo 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the UM Tennis Court Complex. The Flames improved to 4-2 within the conference and 11-2 overall, while the Falcons dropped to 6-7, 3-3 GSC.
Filipe Krohn and Stefan Mos began doubles competition with a 6-2 win over Paul Sobich and Simon Luigs at the second position. Dylan Kamel and Luiz Brandao beat Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen 6-2 to even doubles at 1-1. Ryota Nakajima and Guilherme Gracioli outlasted Wihan van der Merwe and Jace Sanford 7-5 to secure the doubles point for Montevallo.
Krohn dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 beating of Brandao at No. 3 singles to tie the team score 1-1. The Flames gained their first lead with van der Merwe's 6-1, 6-2 win over Sobich at No. 1 singles. Gracioli evened the score again with a three set win over Groenendijk at No. 2 singles. Gracioli won the first and third set 6-2 and 7-5, respectively, while Groenendijk won the second set 6-2.
Mos beat Nakajima 6-0 and 6-3 at No. 5 singles to clinch the team victory for the Flames. Langerhuizen beat Leonidas Lazarides with matching 6-2 set scores. Rytis Razminas supplied the final margin with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Variano at the sixth position.
The Flames are scheduled to play their final home match on Saturday against University of West Alabama. The GSC contest is set for 11 a.m. Lee will recognize its two seniors (Wihan van der Merwe and Jackson Vaughan) in a ceremony earlier in the morning.
