Flames Tennis Trio Named to All-GSC Teams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After a strong season where the Lee University men's tennis team came in third in the standings in the Gulf South Conference, three Flames were named to the all conference team. Wihan Van Der Merwe was on the first team while Quinn Groenendijk and Filipe Krohn were named to the Second Team All-GSC as announced by the league on Thursday. Van Der Merve was named to an All-GSC team for the third time. For both Groenendijk and Krohn it is the first time they were named to an All-GSC team. 

Wihan Van Der Merwe has been a key asset for the Flames in singles and doubles. The senior from Melbourne, Australia is 12-4 overall and 5-3 in GSC play at the #1 singles spot. He is currently ranked #47 in the latest ITA singles ranking. At #3 doubles, he has compiled a 12-4 overall record and 5-2 in the GSC, at the #3 position. In 2022 he was on the second team and in 2024 he was on the first team. He is the 48th player all time to be a all conference player three times.

Quinn Groenendijk is 9-5 overall in singles from the #2 position. In doubles, the junior from Waalwijk, Netherlands has compiled a 10-4 overall record and 5-3 in Gulf South Conference matches at the #1 position with partner Jip Langerhuizen. The duo are ranked #12 In the latest ITA doubles rankings.
 
Filipe Krohn has had a great season for the Flames. The junior from Porto, Portugal has gone 12-4 overall in singles and 6-2 in GSC contests, playing a majority of the season at #3. In doubles, Krohn has gone 13-3 overall and 6-2 in GSC play at #2.

Head Coach Partic Hynes is proud of the accomplishment of his players. "I'm proud of our guys, they have had excellent years. The GSC is such a tough league, it's a great honor to be named to these teams."
