MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 18 Lee University men's tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference Championship with a 4-0 win against Montevallo Thursday afternoon at Lagoon Park. The third-seeded Flames (14-2) claimed both completed doubles matches and the first three singles matches to eliminate the No. 6 seed Falcons (6-10).
Rytis Razminas and Wihan van der Merwe make quick work of Guilherme Gracioli and Ryota Nakajima 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to open the doubles competition. Filipe Krohn and Stefan Mos posted the same score against Simon Luigs and Paul Sobich at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point. Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen, ranked No. 14, led Dylan Kamel and Luiz Brandao 4-2 when their No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished.
Mos began singles competition with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nakajima at No. 5 singles. Razminas was a 6-0, 6-4 winner at the sixth position against Gabriel Variano. Krohn beat Brandao 6-1 and 6-4 at No. 4 singles to clinch the team victory.
The Flames trailed in two of the three unfinished singles matches. At No. 1 singles, van der Merwe, ranked No. 52, led 4-3 in the second set after losing the first set 6-2 to Sobich. Groendijk lost his opening set with Gracioli 6-3 and trailed 3-2 in the second set.
At No. 4 singles, Langerhuizen led Leonidas Lazarides 4-1 in the second set after claiming the first 6-2.
The Flames will take on No. 2 seed West Florida Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET. The semifinal match is set to be played at Lagoon Park. The No. 1 ranked Argonauts advanced to the GSC Semifinals with a 4-0 win over West Alabama.
