Flames Suffer First Loss of Season to #15 Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Two second half goals from Cedarville University proved to be the difference as the Lee University men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday night. The #15 ranked Yellowjackets improved to 2-0-1 while the #21 Flames fell to 2-1.

It was another scoreless half as neither had many opportunities. Marcos Garcia and Ethan Stewart each had shots that were blocked. With just thirty seconds left in the first period, Carlos Fernandes had an opportunity that went just wide of the left post. Cedarville managed just two shots in 45 minutes. Paul Northcutt made one save for the Flames in goal.

Cedarville scored the first goal of the game in the 60th minute. Michael Catanzarite was on the receiving end of a breakaway pass and he beat Northcutt in a one-on-one situation. The Yellowjackets made it 2-0 in the 70thminute as Amari Everage climbed the ladder on a corner kick and headed one into the back of the net. The Flames had a few more chance but could not find the back of the net.

Cedarville outshot the Flames 8-7 but had two more shots on goal. Lee had two yellow cards in the loss while Cedarville had three.

The Flames will continue their road trip in the Buckeye State with a matchup against Ohio Dominican University on Saturday, September 13 at 2:30 PM.

Coach Derek Potteiger's Thoughts:
"I thought it was a really good college soccer game and two teams that weren't giving up very much in the run of play.  The game turned when we made a big mistake on transition for our own set piece and it was hard to get a hold of the game again.  I'm proud of the guys as I thought we had spells where we played well, and ultimately before that big mistake I felt like we were really leaning on them.  Those moments change games and so we need to learn from that and make sure it doesn't happen again. I played really deep today and so some players that are going to need to help us this year got to see the field in a very relevant way. Now we have to turn our attention to Saturday and push for the 3 points at Ohio Dominican."
