CLEVELAND, Tenn. – In a game that featured eight lead changes and seven ties, the Lee University men's basketball team found themselves just four points short with an 80-76 loss to the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Thursday. The three -point shot were falling for each team as UAH made 11 while Lee had 14. With the loss, the Flames fell to 9-9 overall and 6-8 in Gulf South Conference action.
Early on, the teams traded blow for blow with neither team maintaining momentum. Every time UAH had a shot, Lee had an answer. Quentin Toles for UAH made five straight three-point shots midway in the first half. However, Zach Gray and Willie Walton each had three's to answer.
The largest lead for either team was nine points with the Flames going up 18-9 at the 11 minute mark. UAH slowly dwindled the lead down and Lee only led 41-40 at the half.
UAH started the second half strong and got out to a six-point lead at 50-44. That would be largest lead for the Chargers as the Flames got it back down and retook the lead at 61-60. The two teams traded the lead the rest of the way until UAH was up 78-76 with 43 seconds left. Lee had an opportunity to tie the game but a Gray runner rimmed out and UAH was able to make two free throws to seal the win at 80-76.
Lee outrebounded UAH 36-31 but the Chargers dominated the paint with a 38-24 advantage.
Gray led the Flames with 21 points while Walton had 20. Jamarcus Wilkins had ten points and four blocks.
The Flames host the top team in the GSC in the University of West Alabama on Saturday, January 31 at 4 PM.
