CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The University of Alabama in Huntsville displayed why it is one of the top clubs in the GSC on Tuesday evening inside Paul Dana Walker Arena. After dropping the first set to Lee, the Chargers came back to claim the next three sets for the 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-20) victory. UAH improved to 6-1 in conference play and 14-2 overall. The Lady Flames dropped to 4-3, 8-6.
The defeat was the second straight home loss for Lee. Coach Christa Fabre will now take her Lady Flames on the road for three straight contests. They begin on Friday at Mississippi Christian University. The team will move over to the University of West Alabama for a Saturday date before coming back to University of Montevallo to end the road adventures on Tuesday (Oct. 13).
The first set was tied six times before the Lady Flames moved on top and claimed the 25-22 win. The Chargers regrouped and wasted no time capturing the next two sets and gaining the advantage heading into set No. 4.
Lee showed no quit and forced six ties in the set. They fell behind 20-16 and Coach Fabre ordered a timeout. Lee immediately cut the lead to 18-20, and the Chargers called a timeout. From that point on, the visitors were in control, and Lee called one more timeout before dropping the tight 25-20 set and the match.
Lee was outhit by UAH 54-43 and the attack percentage by the visitors was a solid .270 while Lee hit at .138. Payton Danley had 11 kills and three blocks in the loss. Jordyn Butler followed with eight kills and four blocks while Esthefany Rabit pitched in with seven slams and four blocks. Sophia Lippert had seven kills, and Olivia Reevey added four blocks as Lee had 16 blocks compared to 15 for the Chargers.
Sydney Sharpe delivered 19 assists and Berra Soyler had 13. Avery Sample came up with 24 digs. Lippert dug up 13 and Danley had a double-double, 11 digs to go with her 11 kills. Overall, Lee had 59 digs and the Chargers 58.
UAH was led by Ella Schumacher, who was strong with 16 kills and an attack mark of .333. Kayla Ward could certainly be declared one of the game's better players. She had 11 kills and a hitting mark of .435 to go along with five blocks.
Clare Anna Hutto had 24 assists and Cooper Garrett delivered 19. The visitors hurt the Lady Flames with their serves, coming up with 10 in the four-sets. Ward had four and Sydney Durban added three. Brooklyn Stiles also led her team with 14 digs.
