Lady Flames Split Doubleheader With Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.– The Lee University softball team split a double header with Newberry College on Saturday afternoon. Lee run ruled the Wolves 13-1 in game one and then lost in extra innings 5-7 in game two. Lee will return to Cleveland with a 5-7 record and will go to Chattanooga on Tuesday to take on the University of North Georgia at Frost Stadium.
 
GAME 1
 
Lee dominated from the get-go. Eva Armstrong led the game off with a single and then stole second. Hailey Simco reached on an error by the centerfielder, and both came around to score on the error to make it 2-0. Newberry used a double and a single to give the Wolves their only run of the game.
 
Addi Emmerson hit a solo home run in the top of the second. Kaylee Wilson followed that by getting on by an error from the shortstop. Eva Armstrong then singled and both scored on another error. Simco doubled and then Sadie Winsett hit a two-run home run and Lee led 7-1.
 
Emmerson hit her second home run of the day to lead off the third. Wilson bunt singled and then Armstrong singled. Simco walked to load the bases before Alyson Jarvi had a two RBI double. Addi Lewis then singled to score two more and Lee had the 12-1 lead after the third.
 
In the fourth, Simco drove in the final run bringing home Emmerson as Lee went on to win 13-1.
 
Emmerson and Armstrong each had three hits in the game. Eight Lady Flames had a hit as they had 15 in total. Simco led the way with three RBI while Jarvi, Armstrong, Lewis and Emmerson all had two RBI.
 
Kaylee Underwood earned her third win of the season throwing three innings and giving up one run on three hits. Sadie Winsett threw two innings and gave up just two hits.
 
GAME 2
 
The Lady Flames scored the first run of the game in the top of the second. Emmerson reached on an error by Newberry. Then Katie Hastings doubled to bring her home. In the top of the third, Reese Haun singled and then Simco hit a triple to bring her home to extend the lead to 2-0.
 
In the bottom of the third the Wolves used a single, fielder's choice, and another single to plate their first run of the game. They then tied the game in the fourth. Two singles and a double brought in their second run of the game. 
 
Lee retook the lead in the sixth. Hastings singled then Madison Pinzon walked. Winsett singled and then Haun reached on a fielder's choice and Hastings scored to give Lee the 3-2 lead.
 
Newberry took the lead in the bottom of the sixth behind two singles and an error. Lee tied it in the seventh when Alyson Jarvi led the frame off with a solo home run.
 
The game went to extras using the international tiebreaker. Armstrong was placed on second and after a single from Winsett, Haun had a sacrifice fly to give Lee the lead. Newberry won it in the bottom of the eighth after an error tied the game and then a two-run home run walked it off for the Wolves.
 
Hailey Simco had three more hits and an RBI in the loss. Haun had two RBI as well.
 
Layne Bailey started the game. She had three and two-thirds innings pitched. She gave up two run on six hits. Ella Baker threw three and one-third innings and gave up five runs on three hits.
