PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 38 Lee University women's tennis lost its third consecutive match with a 6-1 defeat at No. 2 University of West Florida. The Argonauts improved to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the GSC, while the Lady Flames fell to 4-3 with a 2-2 GSC record.
UWF claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. The No. 18-ranked team of Carlota Verdu and Sandra Recuenco beat Andrea Pascual Blanca and Rima Yoshida 6-1. Guadalupe Martinez and Aline Midori Da Silva were 6-2 winners over Maria Fernanda Duarte and Aliyan Dwyer.
Martinez, ranked No. 54, shut out Vitória Maximiliano 6-0 and 6-0 to put the home team ahead 2-0. Joegensen won both sets against Duarte 6-2 to continue the team's momentum. Kylle Kochis held off Fuhr 6-1, 7-5 to clinch the team victory.
Yoshida, ranked No. 41, posted an upset win in three sets against No. 6 Verdue to end UWF's shutout bid. Yoshida opened with a 6-2 win in the opening set before dropping the second set 6-3. She completed the individual win with a 6-1 margin in the third set.
No. 67 Da Silva held off No. 70 Dwyer to win in three sets at No. 3 singles. No. 38 Recuenco won another three-set match against No. 53 Pascual.
The Lady Flames remain on the road with a trip to Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, on Sunday afternoon. The non-conference match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
