CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming GSC Championship with a 6-1 win against Auburn University at Montgomery Friday morning at the DeVos Tennis Center. The 12
th-ranked Flames improved to 11-1 overall and 6-1 within conference play, while No. 29 AUM dropped to 7-10, 4-3 GSC.
AUM grabbed the early lead after winning both completed doubles matches. Guillermo Sanchez and Mark Nawa beat Rytis Razminas and Francisco Guimarães 6-4 at the third position. Giuseppe Bonaiuti and Jami Savolainen reported the same score at No. 1 doubles against Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with the score knotted at 5-5.
The top two singles matches were matchups between ranked opponents. Filipe Krohn, ranked No. 13, defeated Bonaiuti, ranked No. 59, 6-2 and 7-5 to even the team score at 1-1. Groenendijk, ranked No. 32, gave the Flames a lead with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over No. 62 Savolainen at No. 2 singles.
Langerhuizen was a three-set winner at No. 3 singles to push Lee within one point of the team win. He won his first set 6-4 and Sanchez forced a third set with a 7-5 mark in set two. Langerhuizen won the match with a 6-0 score in the third set.
Razminas dropped just one game to Lucas Rosvall in winning their No. 6 singles match and clinching the team victory for the Flames.
Stefan Mos won both sets against Harry McDonagh by matching 6-3 scores. Guimarães took down Augustin Wallaert 6-0 and 6-2 to complete the singles sweep and supply the final score.
The Flames return to action on Sunday against Montevallo. The GSC contest is set for 1 p.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center with senior day activities scheduled shortly after 11 a.m. at the Alumni Park gazebo.
