Lady Flames Secure GSC Postseason Berth With 5-2 Win Over AUM

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team earned a spot in the upcoming GSC Championship with a 5-2 win against Auburn University at Montgomery Friday morning at the DeVos Tennis Center. The 29th-ranked Lady Flames improved to 8-5 overall and 3-4 within conference play, while AUM dropped to 5-12, 2-5 GSC.

AUM struck first with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles by Ana Clara Campigotto and Valeria Garcia Chavez. Maria Fernanda Duarte and Aliyah Dwyer evened the doubles score at 1-1 with a 6-2 win over Sofia Neri and Mercedes Garcia Cid at the second position.

The doubles point came down to a battle between AUM's 25th-ranked team of Melissa Yakup Pour and Nagisa Yonezawa and Lee's 50th-ranked team of Rima Yoshida and Andrea Pascual Blanca. Pour and Yonezawa outlasted Yoshida and Pascual 7-6 following a 16-14 tiebreaker to secure the doubles point for the Warhawks.

Pascual, ranked No. 66 in singles, opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Neri at the second position. Rima, ranked No. 24, posted a three-set win at No. 1 singles to give the Lady Flames a 2-1 lead. Dwyer continued the Lee momentum with another three-set win at No. 3 singles.

AUM closed the gap to 3-2 with a three-set win by Yonezawa against Vitória Maximiliano at No. 4 singles. Nicolette Fuhr outasted Chavez in a second set tiebreaker 9-7 to win at No. 6 singles 6-2 and 7-6 and clinch the team victory for the Lady Flames.

Duarte beat Campigotto 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker before completed the straight set win with a 7-5 margin in the second set to supply the final score.

The Lady Flames return to action on Sunday against Montevallo. The GSC contest is set for 1 p.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center with senior day activities scheduled shortly after 11 a.m. at the Alumni Park gazebo.
