Lady Flames End Regular Season With 5-2 Win Against Montevallo

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team completed its regular season with a 5-2 win over Montevallo Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The No. 29 Lady Flames improved to 9-5 overall and evened its conference record at 4-4. The Falcons dropped to 5-8, 1-6 GSC.

Prior to warmups, the Lady Flames held a small ceremony to recognize their senior members: Maria Fernanda Duarte and Nicolette Fuhr.

Duarte and Aliyah Dwyer opened doubles competition with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles against Andrea Cano and Ella De Jesus. The 50th-ranked team of Rima Yoshida and Andrea Pascual Blanca secured the doubles point for Lee with a 6-2 win over Klara Podskubkova and Claire Jaramba at the top position.

The No. 3 doubles match was left unfinished with Anna Nevada Henriksen and Latizia Bojara leading Fuhr and Vitória Maximiliano 5-3.

In a battle of ranked opponents, 24th-ranked Yoshida outlasted 72nd-ranked Podskubkova to claim the No. 1 doubles match in three sets. Yoshida won the first set 6-1 and Podskubkova forced a third set with a 6-4 score in the second before Yoshida posted a 6-3 margin in the third set.

Dwyer posted matching set scores of 6-4 to beat Sophia Baillos in straight sets at the third position. Pascual, ranked No. 66, won the first and third sets against Jaramba to win at No. 2 singles and clinch the team victory.

Henriksen ended Lee's shutout hopes with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Maximiliano at the fourth spot. Duarte beat Cano 7-5 and 6-2 at the fifth position. Bojara gave UM a second team point with a three-set win against Fuhr. Fuhr won the opening set 6-3 and Bojara won the second set 6-3. In the superset tiebreaker, Bojara outscored Fuhr 16-14 for the win.

The Lady Flames await the GSC Women's Tennis Championship where they will enter as the fifth seed. They will be matched against fourth-seeded Valdosta State on April 23. The single-elimination event is scheduled for April 23-25 at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.

Coach Patric Hynes' thoughts:
"We got off to a great start and battled hard all day today. We'll get some rest and start getting ready for the GSC Tournament."
