GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Lee University volleyball team ended the opening weekend with a 3-1 victory over Converse University on Saturday. Jordyn Butler had 16 kills while Avery Sample added 20 digs to lead the Flames to a 2-1 record. Lee will head back on the road next weekend to the Augusta/USC-Aiken Invitational
The first set belonged to Jordyn Butler. She had 7 kills in the first set. She helped the Flames jump out to an early 12-3 lead. Converse got it back to within seven points but could not get any closer as Lee won 25-16.
Converse battled back in the second set with 17 kills. The Valkyries pushed the lead slowly out to 21-14 before Lee came charging back. Payton Danley had several kills but Lee fell short 25-23 in set two.
Lee bounced back in set three taking advantage of Converse miscues. The Valkyries hit only 0.042% in the third set while Lee hit.324%. The Flames built another big lead and Converse could not recover and Lee won 25-19.
The Flames continued the dominance in the fourth set. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. They rolled to a 25-13. Sophia Lippert helped roll eight straight points to close out the match.
For the match, Lee hit .303 while they held Converse to just 0.069. Lee had seven different players with kills and 10 with digs. Lippert continued her strong play with seven kills, 14 digs, five aces, and four blocks.
Coach Christa Fabre's Thoughts:
"This match was good for us to continue to get in rhythm with each other. We let our foot off the gas a bit and dropped the second set, providing an opportunity to learn that no team will lay down if they get beat first set.
Jordyn led our team in a solid offensive performance and our setters did a great job of executing the game plan and exposing some of their weaknesses."
