CLEVELAND, Tenn. – It took 78 minutes for the first goal, but the Lee University men's soccer team defeated the University of West Alabama 1-0 on Wednesday evening at the Ray Conn Sports Complex. Freshman Simpson Moore scored the game winner to improve Lee's record to 4-1-2 overall and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference action.
Neither team was able to break through in the first half. Lee maintained most of the pressure and had eight shots with four on goal. UWA had six shots with two on goal. Dan Erez had four saves for UWA while Charles Carriglitto had two saves for Lee.
UWA turned the pressure up in the second half, but Lee had an answer every time. In the 78
th minute Moore finally broke through on a shot from the left side of box. Carriglitto made four more saves in the second half including two big ones in the last three minutes.
Lee had two more shots than UWA at 13-11 while committing 15 fouls.
The Flames will head on the road for two games. They will go to the University of Montevallo on Saturday and then at Trevecca Nazarene University next Wednesday.
Coach Derek Potteirger's Thoughts:
"It's been the narrative all year, we fight and battle and can't get the first shots to go in. Simpson came in off of the bench with confidence and courage and found a way to score. We do a lot of good things up until the box so we have got to keep finding ways to score."
