Lee Defeats Montevallo in Top 20 Showdown

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Lee University women's soccer team won the battle of two teams in the top twenty in the national poll. The #10 Flames defeated the #19 University of Montevallo Falcons 4-2 on Saturday evening in Alabama. Lee scored twice in each half and have now scored ten goals in the last two games. With the win, Lee improved to 5-0-1 while UM fell to 6-2-0.

Lee scored in the 16th minute. An Emma Nelson shot was deflected off of the Falcon goal keeper and Addie Chapman was right there to clean it up and score. Ten minutes later, Moa Ekman found a loose ball in front of the goal and scored her first career goal. Lee took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Lee made it 3-0 in the 57th minute. Isabella Valentine scored on a diving header. She took the corner from Megan Davis and played it past the keeper.

Montevallo scored their first goal of the game in the 68th minute off of a corner kick. Karsyn Ross found the back of the net for the Falcons. UM made it 3-2 five minutes later on a goal by Mary Casey.

The final goal for Lee came in the 81st minute when Emma Nelson chipped the goalie from just inside the penalty box.

Lee outshot UM 13-11 and had eight shots on goal to seven for Montevallo. The Falcons forced nine corner kicks on their shots. Abby Whtcomb had five saves in goal for Lee.

Lee will head to Trevecca Nazarene University on Wednesday, September 23  before returning home to host Mississippi Chrisitan University next Saturday.

Coach Lee Hughes's Thoughts:

"That was a good game with two really good teams going at it! Great group effort from our girls and they continue to grow in their fight and Grit, which is the most important thing for us!! Nothing changes for us, just being better than we were yesterday is the goal!"
