NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lee University men's soccer team handed the Trevecca Nazarene University its first loss of the season in a 3-1 win Wednesday night. The three goals came in the first 35 minutes for the Flames and improved their record to 5-2-2 and dropped the Trojans to 5-1-2.
It was a high scoring affair in the first half. Lee scored all three goals between the 17
th and 35
th minute. Trevecca answered with a goal in the 41
st minute. Max Rode got the scoring going for Lee. In the 17
th minute he found himself on the end of a cross from Ole Backfisch and he easily headed it into the open net.
In the 25
th minute, Michael Oberbeck made it 2-0. Ansel Ledezma had a free kick on the left side of the field. He play into the box bounced around before Oberbeck was able to connect with it on an outstretch foot.
Matias Milla Munoz made it 3-0 in the 35
th minute. After a handball in the box by the Trojans, he converted the penalty kick. Phillip Collins made it 3-1 in the 41
st minute for Trevecca.
The Flames controlled most of the second half but could not find the back of the net again.
Lee outshot TNU 15 -6 in the win. While Trevecca had 16 fouls to just 11 for Lee. Both teams ended up with two yellow cards.
It was the first career goals for both Rode and Oberbeck.3
Lee will return home on Saturday, September 26 at 3:30 PM as they will host Mississippi Christian University.
Coach Derek Potteiger's Thoughts:
"That performance and result had been building all year. Outside of the AUM game, we have played well and at times very well. We just weren't able to put all the pieces together when we needed it. But even in those frustrations, the guys have never lost their belief or their commitment and have kept pushing to get better every week. And tonight they reaped the rewards of that continued investment. I'm really proud of the collective group and a bunch of individual players tonight. We can't get caught up though in the result as we have a really tough opponent coming to Lee on Saturday afternoon."
