Lee men's soccer junior David Perez was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year by the league coaches this past Monday (Nov. 2).

Perez led the GSC in goals scored (17) and total points (39) as the Flames finished third in the conference standings with a record of 11-5-2 overall and a 6-2-1 conference mark. The 17 goals for Perez is the most in the GSC since the 2013 season.

The Dalton, Ga. native capped off his incredible 2015 campaign with two goals in Lee's very first GSC Postseason appearance. The Flames fell 3-2 to West Florida with Perez accounting for both scores.

"It was a no brainer for him (DP) to get player of the year this year," said Furey after Tuesday's match. "When we played UWF down at their place in early October he had a spectacular free kick goal and he's been doing it all season. The thing I liked tonight was he wins the award but he didn't let it go to his head. He came out tonight and scored two goals and even got us the penalty kick in the second half but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be."
