Ashley Matthews has been named Lee University's Female Athlete of the Week after guiding the Lady Flames to a fourth place finish in Saturday's Berry College Invitational in Rome, Ga.
Matthews and the Lady Flames ran a 6K race for the first time this season. The Sanford, N.C. native finished 18th out of 178 runners with a time of 23:48.09. The junior finished just ahead of teammate Cayce Bryan who came in at 19th (23:54.06).
It was really good for our women to race 6k," noted coach Caleb Morgan. "They will be racing that distance at regional and national championships in Division II, so this was a good preview."
The Lady Flames will now head to Hoover, Ala., on October 26 to participate in the Gulf South Conference Championships. Due to Lee's provisional status in NCAA Division II, the team will not be eligible to win the Championship.
