MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Junior All-American Leah Fortune kicked in the winning goal with 2:17 remaining in the second overtime and the second-ranked Lee women's soccer team escaped with a 3-2 SSAC win over host Faulkner University on Saturday evening.
The Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead off a corner kick by Cassie Wilcox before freshman Christina Bovbjerg scored to make it a 1-1 match. Ashley Aragona claimed the assist. But Faulkner moved back on top 2-1 off a free kick by Jordan Mackensie.. "It was a good call. It was a foul," said coach Matt Yelton after the Lady Flames improved to 10-1 on the season and remained unbeaten in SSAC play (8-0). They have won 10 straight.
Fortune took over to lead Lee to victory. Her first goal of the evening tied the match at 2 and forced the first of the two overtime periods. In the second OT, she picked up a nice ball from Ode Fulutudila and nailed it into the back of the net for the winner.
"Give Faulkner credit they played hard and very aggressive match, but our girls simply didn't get off the bus to play tonight. The best part of the match was we found a way to get the win, but we've got to play consistently better." The Eagles dropped to 7-7-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the SSAC.
Better will likely be a must next Thursday when the Lady Flames travel to Atlanta and face an Emory University team that is ranked third in NCAA Division III. The headliner is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
