Volleyball Advances to SSAC Semi-Final Round

Lady Flames Face Loyola on Saturday at 12 noon

Lady Flames celebrate after winning a point

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - It took a wake-up call from Emmanuel College (not a cup of coffee) to spark the Lee volleyball team on Friday morning. As of Saturday morning only four teams remained in the hunt for the championship. The Lady Flames will face Loyola (La.) at noon, while Spring Hill is pitted against Coastal Georgia.

After a stunning first set loss (25-23), the Lady Flames proceeded to win three straight sets with ease (11-25, 10-25, 10-25) and advance out of pool play and into the semi-final round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.

Sophomore Lauren Williams produced likely her best outing as a Lady Flame, coming up with 12 kills and a .688 attack percentage. She also went to the net and came away with five blocks. Freshman Nicole Sumida also had 12 kills, six digs and five blocks.

Junior Irene Ojukwu had nine kills (.381 hitting mark) and 11 digs. Sophomore Marija Zelenovic recorded eight kills, three aces and four blocks as Lee dominated the front line. Not to be denied, junior Paula Martins recorded nine kills and four blocks.

Camil Martinez had a serve that proved too hot for the Lions to handle. The junior registered five aces to go along with 38 assists, four digs and two blocks. sophomore Libby Peigen was the dig leader with 16 and two aces. All totaled, Lee had 12 service aces and 19 blocks.

Riley Forester and Lindsey Fragate had eight kills apiece in the loss. The ninth-ranked Lady Flames improved to 26-9 overall and emmanuel dropped to 23-10. Lee completed pool play at 2-0 and the Lions were 1-1.
