Another impressive win is in the book for the steamrolling Lee women's soccer team. The Lady Flames handed defensive-minded Union University a 4-0 defeat on Friday evening at the Lee Soccer Field.
The win improves Lee to 7-1 against Gulf South competition and 10-3 overall. The Lady Flames will travel to Alabama-Huntsville for their final road test of the season on Sunday at 2 p.m.
"I'm really pleased with the way our group played tonight," said Yelton. "We scored four goals on a team that is really tough to break down. Also, we had several different players contribute some excellent play, and four different goal scorers."
It took the Lady Flames just over seven minutes to put the first goal in the back of the net. Kinsey Cichowitz picked up a turnover and ripped the ball into the upper right corner of the net. At the 20:46 mark the margin reached 2-0 when freshman Summer Lanter posted her ninth goal of the year off an assist from Debbie Rogers.
It was a 3-0 halftime score when Danielle Ciabattone let fly with a strike from 40-yards out and it sailed over the head of Union keeper Emily Waggoner's head and into the back of the net.
The final score of the game came only 25 seconds deep into the second half. Leah Fortune collected her eighth goal of the season off an assist from Ciabattone. Coach Yelton allowed his reserves to see plenty of playing time the remainder of the half.
"What I'm really pleased with is how we played in getting this win," noted Yelton. "Not only did we get a good result, we played a very attractive style of soccer tonight. The speed and the technical level of our play were exceptional."
The statistics prove what the highly successful coach was saying. Lee had 22 shots and 11 were on the mark. Waggoner turned in a nice effort in goal for the losers, having seven saves against the attacking Lady Flames. Union managed just two shots against the Lee defenders and none were on target.
