PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - If history repeats itself, the Lee men's golf team will have its opponents just where they want them in the final round of the 54-hole NCCAA Golf Championship begins on Wednesday.

Traditionally a John Maupin coached team plays its best golf when trailing by two or more strokes going into the final 18. The Flames will be two strokes behind tournament leader Colorado Christian (589) when the nine final teams tee off on Wednesday morning.

After opening on Monday with 292, Lee slipped to 299 on Tuesday and the 591 total after 36 holes not only leaves the club two strokes behind Colorado Christian but nine strokes ahead of the team in their place, Dallas Baptist (596). Oklahoma Wesleyan is in fourth place (598) and Oklahoma Christian rounds out the top five (599).

"Unfortunately, we left a lot of shots out there today," said the Lee coach. "We just didn't close like we would have liked. That said, I think our guys are really looking forward to the opportunity that awaits us tomorrow. If you are a competitor, it is a fun position to be in. We look forward to putting the best effort out there on Wednesday."

Peyton Sliger was the only Flame to break par on Tuesday. He posted a 2-under par 70 and after his opening round of 75 is tied for fourth place in the medalist standings along with teammate Taylor Davis who scrambled home with a 76 on Tuesday after his outstanding 69 on Monday.

The tournament leader is David Ryan of Oklahoma Wesleyan. He has carded two sub-par rounds of 71-70, 141. Lee's Matt Strube had his share of problems on Monday. Like Davis, he opened the tourney with a 69 but recorded a 78 on Tuesday (147) and is now tied for ninth place.

Corey Sheppard is tied for 28th. Sheppard struggled on Monday with a 79 but improved to 76 on Tuesday and stands at 155. His teammate Ryne Thompson came in at 156 (79-77).

Wednesday's championship round is scheduled for an 8:30 tee time. Both the men and women's live scoring is available on Golfstat.
