Volleyball Sweeps by Alabama-Huntsville, 3-0

Lady Flames Welcome Christian Brothers on Friday

After a slow start to the 2014 season the Lee volleyball team has picked up their play of late and they displayed that sharper form on Tuesday night in Walker Arena with a 3-0 win over The University of Alabama In Huntsville.

The Lady Flames jumped out to a convincing 25-17 victory in set one and never looked backed as they exacted some revenge on the Chargers (15-12, 9-10) for an earlier season loss in Huntsville. Lee led from start to finish in set two (25-19) and held off a late run by the Chargers in set three (25-22) to seal the straight set victory.  The Lady Flames have now won three straight matches at home and move to 4-1 in their last five overall.

"It feels good to comeback and beat a team we lost to earlier in the season," said the head coach Andrea Hudson. "We are a lot healthier now and I think that showed up in tonight's match.

The Lady Flames featured a balanced scoring attack as Brooke Wilsman and Latrice Johnson led the way with 10 kills each. A trio of players followed closely behind as Lauren Williams, Patty Orozco and Catherine Conley each had eight slams. Sadie Johnson recorded 22 assists while Haley Foote chipped in 21.

"We got such good production from all of our middle players tonight," noted Hudson. "Lauren (Williams) and Cat (Catherine Conley) were very good around the net."

Defensively the Lady Flames got 23 digs from libero Stephanie Hernandez. The native of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico leads the team with 411 digs and averages just over four a set on the season.

The Chargers were led by Jordan Morrison's 10 kills. Ashton Baker helped set up the offensive with 20 assists while Kennedie Lariscy aided the defensive effort with 18 digs.

The Lady Flames (11-17, 8-10) still have a chance to finish at .500 in the Gulf South Conference as they welcome Christian Brothers to town in the annual Volley for a Cure match on Friday at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the year with Union University on Saturday night.

"We are looking to have a great crowd here on Friday for our Volley for a Cure match and to honor our three seniors," said Hudson. "We will honor breast cancer survivors and be giving away a scholarship to a high school senior. We hope the community will come out and support the event and by a t-shirt to help raise money."

T-shirts will be available for $5 on Friday night and will continue to be sold throughout the year.
