Lee women's soccer coach Matt Yelton described the evening best when he told his players "this game is always a special event each and every year. I tell you the same-tonight we play for something bigger than just a win or loss." The veteran coach added that he thought his players did a great job of embracing that fact.

After dropping a pair of tough matchups in Florida this past weekend, the Lady Flames scored their first victory of the year, 3-0 over visiting Findlay University (Ohio) on Friday night in the annual Kickin' It For Kids With Cancer contest.

"This event gets bigger and bigger every year and the good people of Cleveland have really embraced the cause," added Yelton. "A ton of credit needs to go to my wife Tamara. She is the engine behind this whole event and takes on so much to make sure it comes off at this high level. I also think a lot of the credit for the success of tonight goes to our players. This is an event they have really taken ownership of and really embraced as a cause they believe in and want to get behind."

Lee jumped out to a 2-0 half-time advantage and never looked back. Kaela Leskovar scored the game's first goal at the 11:05 mark. Kathryn Healy collected the assist. The Lady Flames increased the margin to 2-0 in the 28th minute when Kinsey Cichowitz slipped a shot past the keeper off an assist from Nicole Blanchard. The game's final score came in the 65th minute when Leskovar tallied her second score of the night. She looped the ball over the head of the Findlay keeper from 35 yards out.

"The two goals that Kaela got tonight have been coming," noted the Lee coach. "She has really worked hard on her game and she gets herself into the right spots so often that she is going to get goals. Her first score tonight was just a product of getting in the right space and the second score was just one of those quality goals that come your way every so often."

Lee dominated the entire contest, out-shooting the visitors 17-9. Seven of the Lady Flames' shots were on goal, while all five of Findlay's shots on goal were turned away by Lee goalkeeper Marvel Egwuenu.

Yelton added on thought after the fog began to roll in. "The truth about our performance tonight is that we actually didn't have our best outing. We played much better this past weekend and came away with two losses but we will take the win and move on. We did some good things tonight. I thought Kinsey had a very good outing and that the overall play of our midfield was solid for the majority of the game."

Yelton was quick to point out that he could not complain when his team scored a shutout. "Our back four and goalkeeping were solid all night long, but I thought Sam Pewitt put in a very good performance. She is starting to regain her form after missing most of the last two seasons with injuries."

The Lady Flames face another big test on Sunday when Ohio Dominican visits the Lee Soccer Field. "We have seen a little of them and from what we gather, they were very unlucky to not come away from last weekend with better results. They will be a well-coached and disciplined team. We need to get ourselves ready to go again." The action is slated to get underway at 2 p.m.
