Women's Soccer Wins, 1-0

Turns Back West Georgia in Defensive Battle

Box Score Freshman Nicole Blanchard scored an unassisted goal in the 61st minute and the Lee defense was outstanding for the entire 90 minutes in a tough 1-0 victory over a stubborn West Georgia squad at the Lee Soccer Field on Friday evening.

The win gives the Lady Flames a 2-0 record in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) and evened their overall mark at 3-3-1. The Wolves dropped to 1-2 in league play and 1-7-1 overall.

"How West Georgia has only won one game is beyond me," remarked Lee coach Matt Yelton after the battle. "I thought they put on an outstanding performance tonight and I think you'll start seeing them pick up more wins as the season progresses."

Neither team could mount much of a scoring threat in the opening half, but the Lady Flames came out of the break much more aggressive and quickly took the fight to the Wolves. "We got another good performance out of our defense tonight," noted Yelton. "Offensively we were not as good as we have been the last two games. We need to find some consistency in our performance and be better with our decision making."

Lee's defense allowed West Georgia only four shots the entire night and just one was on target. Erin Olson, making her first start of the year in goal, picked up the save. The Lady Flames got only five shots in the first half but doubled that amount in the second 45 minutes. Five of the shots were on goal. Katie Miklauich, a very aggressive West Georgia keeper, finished with four saves. Lee also had eight corner kicks and did not allow the visitors any.

It'll be a short turn around for the Lady Flames. They will travel deep into south Georgia and face Valdosta State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
