Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Host Barry University, ranked No. 3 in one NCAA Division II poll, scored a pair of goals late in the second half on Sunday evening and handed the Lee women's soccer team their second defeat in two rugged Florida road encounters. "There aren't a lot of coaches that start the year 0-2 and feel optimistic," said Lee head coach Matt Yelton. "But I really like the group that we have to work with and believe we will get much better by the time we hit the conference season.
"I can't fault the effort of the team tonight," Yelton stressed. "We played a very good team on the road and deserved more from the game than we got. Our effort was very good. However, we sometimes make mistakes that experienced teams wouldn't make. Barry is a team with a lot of experience and a lot of quality that won their (Sunshine) conference a year ago.
We are a better team because of these two games on the road, We are gaining a lot of valuable experience as we build toward 2015 postseason opportunities in the NCAA.
The Lady Flames jumped on top 1-0 just three minutes deep into the battle. Nicole Blanchard recorded the score and Alison Braun registered the assists.
Lee's defense stood strong until the 67:32 mark in the second half. Tamara Vuckovick drilled home a long free kick to give the host Bucs the equalizer. With only 7:05 remaining and the hard fought contest pointing toward a possible overtime, the Bucs got deep inside the Lee box. Jojo Frigeric dished off a well-placed assist to Shanice Robe who scored what turned out to be the game winner.
Some five minutes earlier the Lady Flames had an opportunity to move on top, but Kathryn Healy's shot was deflected and a rebound try missed.
Lee had 11 shots and placed five on goal. Barry, rallying late, took 14 shots and delivered five on goal. Lady Flames' keeper Marbel Egwuenu had four saves and so did Barry keeper Becca Rogers. Lee was awarded two corner kicks and Barry three.
The Lady Flames will open the home season next Friday at 7 p.m. when they host the University of Findlay (Ohio) in the annual Kickin' For Kids with Cancer match.
