ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Behind a solid outing from Angie Hughes the Lee softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Barton College on Saturday with a 9-0 victory in the Flagler College Tournament.
The Lady Flames (4-0) outscored the Bulldogs (0-4) by a combined total of 14-0 in the two games and have outscored their opponents by a staggering 59-0 margin through the first four contests. Lee will look to remain perfect on the young season as it wraps up the event tomorrow battling host Flagler College at 10 a.m. before testing Embry-Riddle University at noon.
LU 9, BC 0 (Game Two) Hughes (2-0) was locked in from start to finish as the junior tossed a complete game (6 innings) shutout to guide Lee to the 9-0 run-rule victory in game two.
Hughes struck out 10 and allowed just three hits and one walk. In her first two outings of 2015 she has now worked 11 innings allowing no runs, three hits and one walk to go along with 19 strikeouts.
Once again the Lee offense provided plenty of support early in the contest. The Lady Flames scored four runs in the first and two more in the second.
Dominique Hannah continued her torrid start at the plate with three hits including the game-winning double. Hannah drove in three runs and scored once. NiaRaye Ceasar tripled in the first and finished 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Freshman Lindsey Watson added two hits and Amanda Lynn and Lexie Dean continued to set the table at the top of the order. Lynn scored three times and Dean crossed the plate twice.
Ashlyn Reagan started for the Bulldogs and gave up six runs (five earned) in 4 2/3 innings of work. Reagan surrendered nine hits and walked three. Haley Baxley came on in the sixth to try and extend the contest but Hannah doubled in a pair of runs to complete the run-rule.
LU 8, BC 1 (Game One) The Lee softball team opened up play at the Flagler College Tournament with an 8-0 blanking of Barton College on Saturday morning under clear skies and sunshine.
After scoring an incredible 24 first inning runs in the season opener against Hiwassee College last weekend the Lady Flames got the bats going early once again in this contest with five runs in their first at bat.
The top of the order delivered early and often for Lee. The top four hitters in the lineup, Amanda Lynn, Lexie Dean, Dominique Hannah and Emily Dagnan each recorded two hits. Lynn scored three runs and Hannah doubled, drove in two and scored two runs. Freshman catcher Dagnan drove in a pair of runs and walked twice.
The Lady Flames' offense pounded out 11 hits, 10 of which were singles. Lee capitalized on the wildness of Barton pitchers and drew eight free passes in the game.
Freshman Leigh Beatenbough (2-0) worked four scoreless innings in the circle to record her second straight collegiate victory for the Lady Flames. Beatenbough gave up three hits and three walks while striking out four.
Brianna Eichbaum pitched the final three innings in relief. The freshman allowed just one run on one hit and walked three.
The Bulldogs avoided the run-rule with a solo home run by Megan Kelly to cut the margin to seven in the bottom of the fifth.
Liz White was tagged with the loss after failing to get out of the first inning. White gave up five runs on three hits and walked three. Alex Baker and Haley Baxley came on in relief to settle the Bulldogs down. Baker worked 2 1/3 innings giving up one run on three hits and five walks. Baxley pitched the final 4 2/3 and gave up a pair of runs on five hits.
