Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. – The road has not been kind to the Lee University volleyball team. After a 3-0 loss to Alabama Huntsville on Friday evening, the Lady Flames suffered another 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-18) defeat at the University of North Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
While Lee was suffering two losses in Gulf South Conference play (GSC), the Lions were picking up a pair of conference victories. On Friday, they scored a big win over Shorter University. The Lady Flames dropped to 4-3 overall and North Alabama improved to 9-2.
Lee got off to a slow start in the first set and never really got on track. However, they battled back in the second stanza and actually tied the Lions on five occasions before the host team pulled out the 25-21 victory.
In the third set, the contest was tied at 13 before the Lions ran off six unanswered points in gaining a 19-13 advantage. At that point, the margin was too much for the Lady Flames to make up.
"We didn't play well against Huntsville or today," said Lee assistant coach Kevin Hudson after the match on Saturday. "We had way too many unforced errors in both matches. We will have to back, regroup, reevaluate and keep working on getting better."
Sylvia Sartori had 11 kills, two service aces and three digs in the loss. Brooke Wilsman followed with seven kills and seven digs. She also had a couple of blocks. Catherine Conley walked away with five kills and a team-high five blocks. Erin Hill had three blocks and two kills. While Makayla Beebe recorded six digs. Sadie Johnson was the assist leader with 15. She also came up with three digs.
The Lions were strong at the net and got 11 kills from Natasha Fomina and Lexie Bradley followed with 10. Overall, North Alabama had 43 kills to Lee's 30. Andrea De Leon dished off 38 assists for the winners, while Ashtyn Kapovich was the dig leader with 18.
The Lady Flames will return home on Tuesday and face another strong GSC opponent in Christian Brothers University. The contest is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
