Volleyball Welcomes Blazers, Argos To Town

Sophomore libero Makayla Beebe serves up an ace in a match with North Alabama earlier this season.

The Lee volleyball team will look to stay alive in the hunt for the final Gulf South Conference Tournament spot as they host a red-hot Valdosta State squad tonight and the top team in the league, West Florida, on Saturday afternoon.

MATCHING UP WITH THE BLAZERS
The Lady Flames (10-12, 6-8) will look to rebound after dropping a five-set battle to Christian Brothers on Tuesday at Walker Arena. The Lady Bucs wasted no time in claiming the first two sets, 25-20, 25-19 and appeared to be ready to score a three-set victory. The Lady Flames had other ideas, bouncing back to capture the next two sets 25-19, 25-21. The short-set went down to the wire with the lead shifting back and forth. With the set deadlocked at 13, the Lady Bucs scored the final two points to hand the Lady Flames the tough defeat.

Silvia Sartori is fifth in the GSC in total kills with 297 to pace the Lee offensive effort this season. Defensively, it's Makayla Beebe who has settled in nicely into the libero spot this year. The sophomore helps to defend the heavy hitters in the league as she ranks third in the GSC with 406 digs.

Sadie Johnson and Kristi Farley have split time at the setter position and have teamed to help the Lady Flames rank third in the conference in assists per set (11.90).

The Blazers (12-11, 8-5) come in winners of eight of their last 10 matches. Valdosta has dropped just eight sets during that stretch. The Blazers will look to counter the powerful offensive play of Sartori as they sport the second best mark in opponent's hitting percentage in the conference this season at .161.

Susanna Peonia leads the offensive attack for Valdosta State with 289 slams on the year. Sara Dandridge (414) and Carly Smart (399) have combined for 813 assists from the setter position. Libero Sydney Chick makes her presence felt both offensively and defensively with 22 service aces and 390 digs.

ARGOS ON TOP
On Saturday Lee will host the leader of the GSC, West Florida with the first serve set for 3 p.m. from Walker Arena. The Argos have won five straight matches and have not dropped a set in four straight contests, heading into a Friday night showdown with Shorter in Rome, Ga.

West Florida won in straight sets over the Lady Flames back on Sept. 23. The Argos are led by Corisha Smith with 231 kills and Kathryn Torre at 225. Monique StCyr is third in the GSC with 893 assists.

FREE PIZZA
The Lee University Athletic Department is offering free pizza to all in attendance at Friday night's game. Fans can pick up a couple of slices at the concession stand and enjoy dinner and some exciting volleyball action.

Those unable to attend can follow all of the action with live video and stats at portal.stretchinternet.com/lee.

EYE ON POSTSEASON

Alabama Huntsville is currently sitting in sixth place at 7-7. The Argos (12-1), North Alabama (11-3), Shorter (11-3), the Blazers (8-5) and Christian Brothers (8-6) occupy spots 1-5.
